Breaking News: Will Iran War Make Medicines More Expensive?

Can a war that is happening thousands of miles away affect the medicine prices in India? Due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the Pharmaceutical Industry is now facing rising costs and supply breaks. Many Experts are saying that this might also lead to a rise in medicine prices and loss of exports for Indian Pharma companies if the situation continues. But how exactly can a war affect medicines in India? Let’s break it down and analyse the Iran War Impact.

What is the Real Problem for rising prices?

Indian Pharmaceutical Companies generally manufacture a huge number of medicines, but most of the key raw materials used to manufacture these drugs are imported, especially from China. This reliance makes the Iran War Impact more significant for India’s pharma sector.

Because of the current situation, there are a few shipping interruptions; therefore, transporting these materials has now become more difficult and much more expensive.

Industry sources say that shipping charges have nearly doubled, and the companies are now paying around 4,000 to 8,000 extra dollars per shipment. Also, there is a shortage of container ships, which is slowing down the movement of raw materials.

As a result, the cost of the Pharmaceutical ingredients has now increased significantly/

What Actually Happens when the Raw Material Becomes Expensive?

When pharmaceutical companies have to pay more for the raw materials and transportation, the overall cost of manufacturing medicines will automatically increase.

This is exactly what the industry is now experiencing.

Most of the key pharmaceutical ingredients have already increased in price in the past few months.

For example, glycerine, which is widely used in drug formulations, has now become around 64% more expensive since December 2025. The raw material price for Paracetamol has also increased by about 26%

Another drug, Thiocolchicoside, which is used to treat muscle spasms, has seen its price increase from Rs 3.4 lakhs to nearly 7 lakhs, which is more than double.

Apart from these drugs, several solvents and chemicals that are used in the pharmaceutical manufacturing have become 20-30% costlier. Clearly, the ongoing Iran War Impact contributes to these price hikes.

Do Patients have to pay more for medicines?

In India, the prices of many medicines are regulated by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). As per these regulations, pharmaceutical companies cannot directly increase the prices of many essential medicines, which means companies may have to absorb the higher costs for now. However, if the shipping interruption continues for a longer period, some of the medicines can eventually become more expensive.

Is it just medicine prices that are affected?

The impact of this conflict may not be limited to just patients. The Indian pharmaceutical company can also face challenges in its exports.

India exports a large amount of affordable medicines to countries in the Middle East. Most of these nations depend on India for cost-effective drug supplies.

These include Gulf countries like the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait.

If the shipping break continues and the trade routes remain affected, the indian pharmaceutical industry can face export loss of around Rs. 2,500 to 5,000 crores.

India is often called the “Pharmacy of the world” as it supplies affordable medicines to many countries. But disruptions in shipping routes, rising raw material costs and geopolitical conflicts can create pressure on the pharma supply chain. To sum up, the Iran War Impact is being felt across the entire pharmaceutical sector in India.

For now, medicine supplies remain stable. However, if the conflict continues, the pharma industry may face bigger challenges in the coming weeks.
