The Future of Hypertension Treatments Looks More Promising Than Ever

Baxdrostat, A new AstraZeneca drug, Shows 24 hour effectiveness in resistance Hypertension Treatment, giving a new hope to patients struggling with high blood pressure.

A Hope For Resistance Hypertension Treatment

For millions of patients who are suffering and battling everyday with high blood pressure, finding a drug with the right combination of medicine in hypertension treatment can be a really challenging and frustrating journey. But now, there’s exciting news that’s circulating around the world, bringing a new hope to the patients. AstraZeneca, a global leading pharmaceutical company, has launched a new drug called Baxdrostat, which has shown remarkable results in hypertension treatment by controlling the blood pressure for 24 hours straight. This drug will literally be a game changer for people living with resistance Hypertension, a condition where the blood pressure remains high even after getting treatment and using three or more medicines a day.

    Baxdrostat: The Game Changer

Baxdrostat isn’t just another medicine for hypertension treatment, it’s a first-in class therapy drug, which means it works completely in a new way.

Generally, drugs used in controlling the blood pressure targets the blood vessels or the nervous systems, but baxdrostat is built differently, it works by blocking aldosterone, a hormone that helps the body to hold salt and water, both of which raises blood pressure.

Dr. Nitish Naik, a cardiologist at AIIMS, New Delhi, explained that “ By targeting aldosterone directly, the drug is representing a new mechanism for lowering the blood pressure”. This unique approach can help thousands of patients who are unable to respond well to the traditional treatment methods.

A huge clinical trial has been conducted for hypertension treatment across 79 countries, internationally, and the drug has shown 24 hour blood pressure control, including during early morning hours, the time that has a high risk of heart attacks and strokes spiking.

Dr Bryan Williams, the chairperson of medicine at university college London and also the principal  investigator of the Bax24 Phase III trial, stated “it’s remarkable to see this magnitude of reduction, with just over 70% of baxdrostat patients achieving guideline targets consistently over 24 hours.” which means that the patients didn’t just have a temporary decrease in blood pressure but they have got the normal level all day long.

    India’s High Blood Pressure Challenge

Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart diseases and strokes and kidney failure around the world.

In India, the situation is more terrifying, more than 31.5 crores of people are living with hypertension, only in India. Among them only 10% of the patients have their blood pressure under control properly and nearly 10-15% of the patients have resistant hypertension, which means even multiple medicines are not helping them to control their blood pressure. Therefore the arrival of Baxdrostat is more important.

Currently, AstraZeneca is planning to submit the trail results that involve 218 patients from 79 countries to global regulatory authorities soon. If this gets approved, this can be a mark for the beginning of a new era in hypertension treatment.

However, there are still few important steps ahead, as the drug hasn’t yet been tested in Indian patients, the south Asians are said to have a higher risk of heart diseases. Therefore it is crucial to see how well the drug works here in India.

While baxdrostat isn’t available in the market yet, the news around it is justified. For now, patients should continue to follow their doctor’s advice, maintaining a healthy diet, reducing salt intake and staying active.

But soon, thanks to science and innovation, the fight against the stubborn hypertension treatment may finally have a strong new ally.
